Aralia elata: Japanese angelica tree

Plant Identification 

  • Growth Form: shrub/tree, with a height of 20-40 ft and a width of 15-30 ft
  • Leaf type: large, compound, dark green alternate leaves (2-4 feet long)
  • Leaf edges: leaf edges are toothed
  • Stems: coarse, thick stems have large leaf scars and are covered in spines
  • Bark: bark of an adult plant is ridgid or plated
  • Flower: cream white flowers in large panicles that bloom in late summer
