- Leaf type: large, compound, dark green alternate leaves (2-4 feet long)

- Stems: coarse, thick stems have large leaf scars and are covered in spines
- Bark: bark of an adult plant is ridgid or plated
- Flower: cream white flowers in large panicles that bloom in late summer
