Phellodendron amurense: Amur cork tree
Plant Identification:
- Growth form: deciduous tree named for its thick corky bark that can grow up to 50 ft high with a spread nearly as wide
- Bark: light brown on younger trees, gray-brown, ridged, and furrowed on mature trees. Both have spongy or corky bark with a distinctive neon yellow layer of inner bark
- Leaf: opposite, pinnately compound and composed of 5-13 entire, dark green leaflets
- Flower: hanging panicles of yellow-green flowers
- Fruit: abundant clusters of green fruit that turn black and remain on the tree until winter
